Calculate take-home pay

Direct answer

Why can take-home pay fall at age 40?

With the same gross income, care insurance usually raises social premiums from age 40 and reduces take-home pay.

The additional cost from age 40

Health-insured people aged 40–64 pay a care-insurance premium. With the same gross pay, employee insurance rises and take-home pay falls compared with age 39.

The insurer and standard remuneration set the amount

The rate varies by year and insurer and is applied to standard monthly and bonus remuneration, so age alone cannot determine the amount.

Start month and treatment after 65

Confirm the deduction start month around the birthday with the insurer. From age 65, municipalities generally collect care premiums through a separate mechanism.

Care-insurance treatment by age

Follow the guidance of the relevant health-insurance scheme and municipality.
AgeTreatment
Under 40Generally no care-insurance premium
40–64Care premium added to health insurance
65 and overGenerally collected through a separate care-insurance system

Worked examples

  • At the same JPY 8m salary, take-home differs between under-40 and ages 40–64 because of the care premium.
  • Confirm the actual starting month, such as the birthday month, with the insurer.
  • The rate varies by year and insurer, so age alone cannot determine the amount.
